James Currey Publishers are leading academic publishers on Africa, specializing in archaeology, history, politics, development studies, economics, anthropology, gender studies, literary criticism, theatre and film studies.

Our publishing includes the following series: African Issues, Eastern African Studies, Western African Studies, Social History of Africa, UNESCO General History of Africa, African Theatre, African Literature Today, World Anthropology, and the School of American Research Advanced Seminar Series. Readers series are being developed in collaboration with the International African Institute and the Review of African Political Economy

We aim for the widest accessibility possible, publishing most titles simultaneously in cloth and paperback editions, and having an active policy of co-publishing in Africa and North America.

Academics, booksellers and reviews editors outside of the UK and Europe should note those titles which have a co-publisher in their country and direct their enquiries and orders to that publisher.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PROPOSAL FOR PUBLICATION

We welcome proposals for consideration before submission of a manuscript. Proposals should include a brief synopsis of the main argument and objectives of the work, estimated length, intended readership and a contents list with short descriptive paragraphs of each chapter. A brief personal C.V. is also useful.

Initial enquiries may be sent by post or e-mail. Please do not send e-mail attachments unless requested by the publishers.

Authors of recently completed theses are encouraged to contact us with proposals, but they should be aware that even the best thesis requires revision before being successfully transformed into a book. We advise that, as well as listening to the suggestions of supervisors and examiners, the most important thing is to seek the reactions of a wide range of colleagues before approaching a publisher.

We do not normally accept unsolicited manuscripts. We do not accept entire manuscripts or sample chapters by e-mail.

Proposals may be sent directly to members of our editorial team:
